Construction of Museum of Armenian Genocide launched in Uruguay
Montevideo, the capital of Uruguay, has begun building the State Museum of Armenian Genocide –the first one outside Armenia.
The idea was initiated by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Uruguay. It is assumed to open the museum on April 24, 2015, – the centenary of the start of the tragic events in the Ottoman Empire.
Uruguay was the first country in the world to recognize the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire back in 1965. The main wave of Armenian immigrants arrived there in early 1920s, when the formation of the Armenian Diaspora began in Uruguay, where about 15,000 Armenians live now.
"The museum will present not only the Armenian Genocide, but other genocides, including the Holocaust and the genocide of Africans during the epoch of slavery," the "PanArmenian" quotes Oscar Gomez, Deputy Minister of Education and Culture of Uruguay.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that at present more than 20 countries in the world have recognized the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Turkey. Residents of Armenia and Nagorno-Karabakh, and members of Armenian Diasporas worldwide mark April 24 as the Day of Remembrance of the Victims of the Armenian Genocide in the Ottoman Empire in 1915-1923.
