Rights defenders: Human Rights Council under head of Chechnya is unlikely to change the situation for the better

According to Tatiana Lokshina, the deputy head of the Moscow bureau of the Human Rights Watch, the set up of the Human Rights Council Created under the head of Chechnya was purely decorative in nature, while its appointed chairman Timur Aliev will not be able to change the situation.

Let us remind you that on July 19 it was announced that Ramzan Kadyrov, appointed his assistant Timur Aliev to chair the Human Rights Council.

"I don't think that Aliev's appointment will positively affect the situation in Chechnya, although I see nothing negative in it. Nothing will change there," Ms Lokshina told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Timur Aliev went to work for Kadyrov's administration, in fact, under the pressure from the Chechen authorities," said Lokshina, adding that Aliev in such circumstances would not be independent from the authorities.

"I think that in some matters, such as those associated with the social care, their can be something positive. Regarding human rights violations committed directly by power agents controlled by Kadyrov, I'm afraid the Council won't do anything: Timur Aliev is unlikely to rush into the breach," she has summed up.
