Increased public transport fares suspended in Yerevan
The Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan has announced that he suspended the decision to review and increase by 50 percent the public transport fares. The participants of the protest actions held in the Armenian capital have greeted the news with enthusiasm.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that new tariffs came into force on July 20 and immediately caused resistance of local residents who launched daily protests demanding to get back to earlier transport fares.
The Mayor explained his decision to suspend the new fares by the fact that pensioners, students and vulnerable layers of the population are not ready for the 50-percent increase of the fares. According to Taron Margaryan, he ordered to set up a commission for drafting new tariffs within a few months, the "News-Armenia" reports.
The old fares are back in force: citizens of Yerevan are paying 100 drams (7.9 Russian roubles) for a trip in a bus or a fixed-route taxi, the "News.am" reports citing Shushan Sardaryan, the press-secretary of the Mayor of Yerevan.
