In Azerbaijan, CoA leaves "Nida" activist Gurbanly in custody

The Baku Court of Appeal (CoA) has dismissed the complaint lodged by Zaur Gurbanly, an activist of the civil movement "Nida" (Shout), who had been accused of trafficking in explosives, against the decision to extend his custody.

As reported by the "Caucasian Knot", Zaur Gurbanly has been kept behind bars since April 1. The activist has a chronic disease of thalassemia, which, according to his defence and relatives, has sharply aggravated during his stay at the SIZO (pre-trial prison).

In considering his complaint, the CoA disregarded the defence's arguments about poor reasons for his custody and his aggravated health condition, Khalid Bagirov, Gurbanly's advocate, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Keeping him in a confined space impairs Zaur's health. But, alas, the judges were adamant. It's all backed up by a political order – to keep 'Nida' activists isolated at any price. Leaving Zaur in this condition in custody is inhuman treatment. The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) will surely recognize it," Bagirov said.
