Marjory van den Broeke: European Parliament not yet decided on sending observers to Azerbaijani election
The European Parliament will decide whether to send its observers to the presidential election in Azerbaijan in September, said Marjory van den Broeke, the head of the press service of the European Parliament. Thus, she has refuted the information that the European Parliament had decided to suspend its observatory mission in Azerbaijan.
The fact that Azerbaijan is no longer on the list of countries, which require the presence of the observatory mission of the European Parliament over elections, was reported by Elkhan Suleimanov, the head of the Azerbaijani delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly "Euronest".
"Azerbaijan is the first country in Southern Caucasus compliant with democratic standards," the "Trend" quotes Elkhan Suleimanov as saying on July 11.
However, a few days later, Marjory van den Broeke refuted the information about the refusal of the European Parliament to monitor the election in Azerbaijan, the Radio "Azadlyg" reports.
In the opinion of Leila Yunus, an Azerbaijani human rights activist and director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD) the statement of the MP Elkhan Suleimanov on the refusal of the European Parliament to monitor the election is not worth the trust.
"Judging from the situation that we have here, people in the European Union, working with Azerbaijan, have rather clear information about the prospects of the presidential election," Ms Yunus told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
