Armenia: leaflets spread calling to impeach two Yerevan transport officials

Today, at public transport stops, activists of the initiative group "We'll pay 100 drams!" were handing out leaflets calling to dismiss the head of the transport department of Yerevan Genrik Navasardyan and the director of "Yerevantrans" Misak Ambartsumyan.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 26, about 30 activists of the initiative group "We'll not pay 150 drams!" declared an endless sit-down picket in front of Mayoralty demanding dismissal of Genrik Navasardyan and Misak Ambartsumyan.

Ara Saribekyan, a Yerevan resident, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that he supported the protest against increase of transport fares: "I am sure that our young people will succeed. As it turned out, the youth can achieve a lot; most important is to know how to fight for one's rights. It's a pity that this fight wasn't launched earlier."

Let us remind you that that the new fares on buses and fixed-route taxis were enforced in Yerevan on July 20, increasing the cost of a one-travel ticket from 100 (7.9 Russian roubles) to 150 drams (11.8 roubles). The sharp increase of the fares provoked daily protests. On July 25, the Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan announced suspension of introduction of the new tariffs; then it was decided to set up a working commission to discuss the situation with the fares.
