Azerbaijan starts collecting donations for families of imprisoned journalists

The Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS) of Azerbaijan has announced the launch of a charity event to collect donations for providing financial assistance to the families of imprisoned journalists. The action is timed to the International Day of Journalists' Solidarity, celebrated on September 8.

At present, in Azerbaijan, eight journalists are kept in prisons.

The world celebrates the International Day of Journalists' Solidarity since 1958. The date of September 8 was chosen not occasionally - on September 8, 1943, in Berlin, Julius Fucik, a Czechoslovak journalist, was executed.

"Every year, we celebrate the International Day of Journalists' Solidarity by visiting the graves of our colleagues who fell victim to the fight for freedom of speech and media. This year, we decided to support the families of journalists who had been prosecuted. Most of them have minor children," said Emin Guseinov, Director of the IRFS, at an event dedicated to the launch of the campaign held on August 7.

According to his story, the collection of donations will be started on August 8 and completed on September 8. The money raised will be divided equally between the families of journalists kept in prisons.
