ReAl activists complain that authorities hamper Ilgar Mamedov's participation in presidential election
Artificial obstacles are set up for the official nomination of Ilgar Mamedov, the leader of the civil movement "Republican Alternative" (ReAl), now under arrest, as a presidential candidate at the upcoming election in Azerbaijan on October 9. This was stated by Khalid Bagirov, Mamedov's advocate, on August 7 at a press conference that took place in the office of the Institute for Reporters' Freedom and Safety (IRFS).
According to his story, since Mamedov is in custody, he cannot personally submit documents to the Central Election Commission (CEC) for approval of his nomination as a candidate.
"It is therefore necessary that he confers the rights to his authorized representative. This power of attorney can be made up by a notary or the head of the penitentiary facility. However, notaries are not allowed to visit Mamedov, while the head of the Baku SIZO (pre-trial prison) No. 1 evades his duties of a notary," said Bagirov.
Natig Djafarli, Executive Secretary of the ReAl, stated in the course of the above press conference that should the authorities fail, in the coming days, to eliminate the obstacles to the official nomination of Mamedov as presidential candidate, in particular, to allow him draw up the above power of attorney for his authorized representative, the ReAl will start protest actions.
