Residents of South Ossetia pay tribute to victims of August 2008 events

At night on August 8, the Theatre Square of Tskhinvali hosted the action "Living Light of Memory", which brought together several hundreds residents of South Ossetia. The mourning decoration of the square, lots of candles and funeral wreaths spoke about the events of five years ago, when a massive shelling of Tskhinvali was launched, the correspondent of the "Caucasian Knot" reports.

Closer to midnight, the sounds of mourning tocsin informed the participants of the action "Living Light of Memory" about the first minute of the start of warfare in South Ossetia. Relatives and friends of those killed in the fights came to the square to light candles in their memory. The burning candles in the centre of the square formed the date "08.08.08".

The perished people were commemorated by a minute of silence, after which burning torches were sent to the sky over Tskhinvali as a symbol of the lives claimed by the war.

These days, law enforcement bodies of South Ossetia have been transferred to the high alert mode. The events dedicated to the fifth anniversary of the events of August 2008 are covered by more than 20 Russian and foreign media outlets who had expressed their intention to come to South Ossetia.
