In Georgia, CDM offers to constitutionally ban same-sex marriages

The Georgian oppositional Christian-Democratic Movement (CDM) had offered to add the Constitution with the provision allowing marriages only of different sexes. Activists have prepared draft amendments to the Constitution and intend to bring it to the Parliament.

The initiative of Christian Democrats was officially registered by the Parliament of the previous convocation. For the initiative to be considered, the CDM should collect at least 200,000 signatures of its supporters and submit the lists to the Parliament. They began collecting them on August 6 and plan to do it within the next four months.

Let us remind you that in Tbilisi on May 17 this year, a rally in support of sexual minorities was disrupted by a counter-action that turned into a massive fight. According to official sources, 28 persons suffered.

An attempt to hold a gay parade was undertaken on May 17, 2012. Then, about 20 people in the centre of Tbilisi organized a march. It was interrupted by collisions with several priests and members of the "Union of Orthodox Parents", who blocked the march.
