British Prime Minister rejects idea of boycotting Sochi Olympic Games
Great Britain should not boycott the Olympic Games in Sochi because of the Russian law banning propaganda of non-traditional sexual relationships. This was reported today by David Cameron, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
On August 7, British actor Stephen Fry claimed the LGBT-community was discriminated in Russia and wrote an open letter to British Prime Minister David Cameron and the International Olympic Committee, calling on to boycott the Olympic Games in Sochi.
Stephen Fry compared the restriction of the rights of sexual minorities in Russia with the persecution of Jews in Germany during the Berlin Olympic Games in 1936, the RIA "Novosti" reports.
However, today, David Cameron has stated he does not think the idea of boycotting the Olympic Games in Sochi is good.
"Thank you for your note, @stephenfry, I share your deep concern about the violation of the rights of homosexuals in Russia. However, I believe that it is better to fight prejudice by participating in the Winter Olympics than to boycott it," said the Prime Minister in his microblog on Twitter, responding to actor Stephen Fry.
