Georgia: Professor Lado Papava wins election of TSU Rector
Today, Vladimir (Lado) Papava was elected to the post of the Rector of the Tbilisi State University (TSU) named after Djavakhishvili. The voting took place against the students' protest demanding to provide freedom to the university.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on June 12, Alexander Kvitishvili, the Rector of the TSU resigned in protest against the draft amendments to the law "On Higher Education", under which applicants for the post of rector of any university should have a doctoral degree, while the Prime Minister was deprived of the right to appoint Acting Rectors.
According to the voting, Lado Papava will now be the 28th Rector of the TSU, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
According to the protesters, the Academic Council of the TSU is now unable to express the opinion of the numerous university community of Georgia, since it is under the influence of political parties, the "Georgia-Online" reports.
