Near Makhachkala, protesters spend night under open sky
On August 21, in Karaman, where about a thousand Kumyk migrants gathered dissatisfied with the distribution of land plots, unrests began; and the police pulled up additional forces to the area.
They failed to prevent unrests, and as a result at least two persons were hospitalized; several others received medical care on the spot, said Zalimkhan Valiev, the head of the public council of the village of Kyakhulay.
In the evening, the place of violence in Karaman was visited by state officials, who said that they would set up a commission to resolve the conflict in Karaman," Valiev told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to his story, the crowd decided to spend the night under the open sky and stated that they would not disperse until there is any clearness on the issue of disputed land plots.
If not for the police, the today's opposition of Laks and Kumyks could have led to tragedy, said Gadjimurad Sagitov, the editor-in-chief of the "Novoe Delo" newspaper, who visited Karaman.
"There are a lot of policemen there. Attempts of provocations were undertaken: a bottle of Molotov cocktail was thrown in the direction of law enforcers. Young people brought armature bars with them. Journalists were not initially admitted to the place of events. The Sulak highway was blocked; a huge traffic jam formed; and GIBDD (traffic police) inspectors didn't know the reason, saying that there was a counterterrorist operation (CTO) there," Gadjimurad Sagitov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
