Ecologists and NGO activists apply for ecological rally in Sochi

Activists of several civil society organizations and political parties have submitted a notification to the Mayoralty of Sochi about a 400-strong rally on environmental issues on September 7. So far, the Mayoralty has moved no objections.

Natalia Kalinovskaya, the chair of the Territorial Public Self-Ruling (known as TOS) "Psou", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the rally was caused by violations of citizens' rights to healthy environment.

"The whole Imereti Lowland, where they are erecting Olympic facilities, is full of food remnants, empty alcohol bottles, plastic containers and dumps of construction wastes. All this rubbish is in the vicinity of the beaches and nobody is removing it. Conversely, pollution continues by the builders of the shore protection. Even in case of a small storm all this dirt will get washed off into the sea," said Natalia.

The rally also plans to raise the issue of contamination threat to the water intake from the MzymtaRiver, caused by hazardous construction wastes stored in the Akhshtyr Quarry.
