In Azerbaijan, Isa Gambar gives up his run for presidency in favour of Djamil Gasanli
The leader of the oppositional "Musavat" Party Isa Gambar has recalled his candidacy from the presidential race in Azerbaijan at the upcoming October 9 presidential election. He made his decision public today at the sitting of the board of the "Musavat" Party, which has supported the position of its leader.
Isa Gambar said that his self-removal was caused by nomination of Djamil Gasanli as a backup presidential candidate from the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF), where he and a number of "Musavat" activists are also members.
Let us remind you that on August 23 Professor Djamil Gasanli from the Baku State University was elected to be a backup presidential candidate from the NCDF of Azerbaijan. The issue of the backup was addressed because of a possibility that the main NCDF candidate – the screenwriter Rustam Ibragimbekov – might not be registered, if his Russian citizenship is not terminated prior to the registration deadline.
Isa Gambar called on all the structures and all the members of his party to actively support Djamil Gasanli and do everything possible for his victory, Mekhman Djavadoghlu, the deputy chairman of the "Musavat" Party, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
Let us remind you that after the August 20 sitting of the CEC of Azerbaijan, the total number of approved presidential candidates made 14.
