Party "Democratic Movement-United Georgia" nominates Nino Burjanadze as presidential candidate
The Party "Democratic Movement-United Georgia" has nominated its leader, the former Speaker of Parliament Nino Burjanadze as a candidate for the presidency of Georgia at the forth coming October 27 election.
"The decision to nominate Nino Burjanadze was also made by the 'People's Assembly', but since two subjects cannot apply to the Central Election Commission (CEC) on nomination of one candidate, it was decided that Burjanadze will be nominated by a political entity – the party," Georgy Kobakhidze, the party spokesman, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
The press service of the CEC told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that as of August 26, the CEC received 39 applications from those who want to run for the presidency. Eight of them were nominated by political parties, and the rest of them – by initiative groups that need to get registered in advance at the CEC.
So far, only two persons have been successfully registered as presidential candidates: Mikhail (Gela) Saluashvili, nominated by an initiative group, and the leader of the Labour Party Shalva Natelashvili.
The nomination deadline is September 8.
