Azerbaijan: 21 registered presidential candidates
Today, Sardar Jalaloglu, the leader of the Democratic Party of Azerbaijan, and self-nominees Hidayat Rustambeyli and Rauf Guliev have been approved as candidates for presidency, thus bringing the total number of approved presidential candidates to 21.
Let us remind you that the vote for the president of Azerbaijan is scheduled for October 9.
Hidayat Rustambeyli is a lawyer, and Rauf Guliev is unknown to the general public, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
According to the latest data of the Central Election Commission (CEC), so far, only the incumbent President Ilham Aliev has been officially registered as a presidential candidate.
The list of approved applicants includes Professor Jamil Gasanli from the Baku State University, the backup candidate from the National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF); the documents of the screenwriter Rustam Ibragimbekov, the NCDF leader, were not accepted by the CEC on the ground that he also has Russian citizenship and failed to permanently live in Azerbaijan for the last 10 years.
