Sochi: residents of Novosyolov Street stop builders who tried to cut down a cedar
Today, residents of Novosyolov Street in Sochi demanded to stop cutting down the cedar trees, which protect the residential area from the alternate highway. The work was suspended, the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was informed by Valentina Fortuna, the head of No. 13 in Novosyolov Street, that she had learnt from workers that "they were told fell the cedar, because it interferes with installation of gates for entering the drivers' school from the side of Tchaikovsky Street."
Residents of nearby houses gathered in the venue. Builders showed them a permit for felling dated August 30, 2013, and signed by Alexei Zhmailo, the head of the Forest and Park Division of the Sochi Administration, said Olga Alekseeva, another resident of the street. "The permit said that a 'sanitary' felling was sanctioned, that is, the tree is sick and should be cut down. However, this is a lie – the cedar is strong and healthy in the prime of its life," said Alekseeva.
Residents said that they would not allow destroying the municipal property; moreover that the recent felling of cedars has significantly disrupted the environment. These are the only remaining trees that separate their houses from the railway, the alternate highway and the garage of the drivers' school.
Let us remind you that on June 23 Sochi residents stated during a picket that the city-resort was destroyed because of the build-up of "green zones" of the city.
