Rustam Ibragimbekov challenges at Azerbaijani SC refusal of CEC to allow him running for presidency
Scriptwriter Rustam Ibragimbekov, Chairman of the opposition National Council of Democratic Forces (NCDF) of Azerbaijan, has filed an appeal to the Supreme Court (SC) against the refusal of the Central Election Commission (CEC) to allow him running for the presidency of Azerbaijan.
On September 2, the appeal was filed to the Supreme Court by Fuad Agaev, an advocate of Rustam Ibragimbekov.
Let us remind you that on August 27, the Central Election Commission (CEC) refused to approve the documents submitted by Rustam Ibragimbekov. The CEC has motivated its decision by the facts that Rustam Ibragimbekov has citizenship of the Russian Federation and that he has not been permanently residing in the country for the recent 10 years. Rustam Ibragimbekov has challenged the decision. However, on August 30, the Baku Court of Appeal dismissed the appeal filed by Rustam Ibragimbekov.
The Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) has upheld the CEC decision to refuse to approve Rustam Ibragimbekov as a presidential candidate for the election to be held on October 9, for three reasons: existence of dual citizenship, failure to submit sufficient number of documents about the absence of foreign engagement, and non-permanent residence in the territory of Azerbaijan for recent 10 years. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by advocate Fuad Agaev.
