Adelkhanov: Lakaev's extradition to Russia depends on ECtHR's position in Osmaev's case
In the opinion of Emil Adelkhanov, a member of the Board of the NGO named "Caucasian Institute", when considering the extradition of Yusup Lakaev from Georgia to Russia, the former will take into account the precedent with Adam Osmaev, whose extradition to Russia was postponed on the recommendation of the of the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).
Let us remind you that on September 19 it became known that Yusup Lakaev, a native of Chechnya, who was detained on September 13 inBatumi after a shootout with Georgian policemen, is suspected of killing the Russian diplomat Dmitry Vishernev in Sukhumi on September 9.
"When deciding on Lakaev's extradition, Georgia will have to take into account the recent decision of the ECtHR, which rejected the Ukraine's right to extradite Adam Osmaev to Russia, referring, in particular, to the fact that Osmaev's rights may be violated in Russia; and he may be tortured there," Emil Adelkhanov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to his story, in Yusup Lakaev's case, much will depend on the actions of his advocate.
"If the advocate manages to have Lakaev's case considered by the ECtHR, then, despite any decision of the Georgian authorities, he won't be extradited to Russia," said Emil Adelkhanov.
