Georgia registers 22 presidential candidates
The Georgia's Central Election Commission (CEC) has announced that 22 politicians have been registered as presidential candidates for the election scheduled for October 27.
In total, the CEC received 54 applications from potential candidates: 12 were nominated by political parties; others – by initiative groups.
The signatures of their supporters were submitted by 26 candidates: – 11 nominees of political parties and 15 – of initiative groups The CEC refused to register 29 candidates.
According to the electoral legislation of Georgia, the incumbent President Mikhail Saakashvili, who is completing his second term, has no right to stand in the forthcoming election. The voting day is October 27.
