In Azerbaijan, advocate of detained journalist claims being not allowed to visit his client
In Azerbaijan, advocate Elchin Sadygov complains that he is not allowed to visit Parviz Gashimli, a journalist and human rights defender, who is kept at the SIZO (pre-trial prison) of the Ministry of National Security (MNS). Elchin Sadygov has reported that he filed a complaint against the arrest of Parviz Gashimli and expressed his concern that investigators tortured his client to obtain the required evidence.
Let us remind you that on September 17, Parviz Gashimli, a staff member of the independent newspaper "Bizim Yol" (Our Way) and the director of the website "moderator.az" was detained on charges of smuggle and illegal possession of weapons. On September 18, the Sabail District Court of Baku pronounced to the journalist the pre-trial restriction measure in the form of arrest for two months. The journalist states the charges are politically motivated.
Meanwhile, Elchin Bekhbudov, the head of the organization "Committee against Torture", told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that he called to the SIZO of the MNS and that he was assured that the journalist had not been subjected to torture.
The arrest of Parviz Gashimli and searches conducted at his working places and in his house were accompanied by gross violations of the rights of the journalist and human rights defender. This was reported by the statement signed by 30 civil society activists.
Earlier, Kyamran Gashimli, the father of journalist Parviz Gashimli, said that in recent days, staff members of the Azerbaijani MNS tried to persuade his son to cooperate with the secret services. According to the Kyamran Gashimli's story, his son is also a member of the Senior Majlis of the "Azerbaijani Popular Front Party" (APFP). And the journalist's father associates the pressure to Parviz with the above fact.
