In Azerbaijan, BCA leaves son of opposition party's leader in custody

Today, the Baku Court of Appeal (BCA) dismissed the complaints filed by Tyurkel Kerimli, a son of Ali Kerimli, the leader of the "Popular Front Party of Azerbaijan" (PFPA), and two other young men, who had been sentenced by the court to administrative arrest on charges of disobeying police.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 22, Tyurkel Kerimli and his two friends were detained after they attended an opposition rally. Young people were charged of tearing off election campaign materials of presidential candidates from street stands and of disobeying police. On September 23, the court sentenced Tyurkel Kerimli to 25 days of administrative arrest.

The BCA's consideration of the complaints was just a formality. This was told to the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent by Fakhraddin Mekhtiev, an advocate of the young people.

"We have pointed out that except for the policemen themselves, no one witnessed against young people. We have also reminded the audience that the first instance court refused to consider the records from surveillance cameras located in the place where the young people were detained. The above record would inevitably prove innocence of young people. However, the BCA has dismissed all our motions," Fakhraddin Mekhtiev has said.
