Yerevan: about 60 people take part in rally in support of Tigran Arakelyan

In Yerevan today, about sixty people have rallied in support of Tigran Arakelyan, an activist of the "Armenian National Congress" (ANC) Party, who is serving his six-year prison term on charges of disorderly conduct and resistance to authority in a conflict on August 9, 2011. According to the participants, he will be set free within the upcoming amnesty.

"I believe that on October 7, at the upcoming court session Judge Eva Darbinyan may decide to consider the case in the accelerated order. I guess that a verdict will be passed, and, most of all, the amnesty will cover the charged article; and with the good will of the judges, Tigran Arakelyan may be set free right in the courtroom," said Aram Manukyan, a vice-chairman of the oppositional ANC and the secretary of the party's parliamentary faction.

He added that the possible Arakelyan's release should not change anything in the actions of the ANC. "We should all continue fighting for Tigran's liberation both domestically and in international organizations," said Manukyan.

The policemen standing in front of the General Prosecutor's Office (GPO) did not intervene in the action.
