MIA: for recent 10 years, more than 3500 militants killed in Northern Caucasus
For recent 10 years, from 2003 till 2013, more than 3500 members of the armed underground of Northern Caucasus were killed, and nearly 8000 others were detained. This was reported by Sergey Chenchik, Chief of the Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Russian Federation for the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD).
Meanwhile, according to his report, at least one-third of the militants have left "socially non-adapted" children; and a large majority of such children study at Islamic schools, ignoring ordinary schools and obtaining no general secondary education. This was stated by Sergey Chenchik during the meeting of the heads of departments to combat extremism in the North-Caucasian Federal District (NCFD) and the Southern Federal District (SFD), held on November 1 in Pyatigorsk.
Sergey Chenchik has noted that the data show the increasing level of support of the ideas of radical Islam among young people in the Caucasus, the "Interfax" reports.
According to calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources, during the first nine months of 2013, 718 persons suffered in the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. Of them, 375 persons were killed, and 343 persons were wounded.
Meanwhile, according to the information of the law enforcement agencies, 220 of the total number of persons killed since the beginning of the year in Northern Caucasus, were involved in the activities of illegal armed formations (IAFs). Only 11 out of wounded persons are suspected militants. Besides, for the first three quarters of this year, 87 law enforcers were killed, and 220 were wounded. Civilians also suffered during the armed conflict in the NCFD: of them, 68 persons were killed, and 112 injured.
