ECtHR finds violation of rights of residents of Chechnya, whose relatives disappeared in 2000
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has issued the next decision on the complaint filed by residents of Chechnya regarding the disappearance of their relatives. According to the ECtHR's decision, the complainants are to receive compensation in the amount of about 200,000 euros.
In their complaint filed to the ECtHR in September 2006, ten residents of Chechnya reported on the disappearance of their three relatives in April 2000. In their complaint, they also reported on the fact that investigations initiated in that connection were repeatedly suspended.
The complainants have appealed to the ECtHR with the complaint about violation of Articles 2 (right to life), Article 3 (prohibition of torture and inhuman and degrading treatment), Article 5 (right to liberty and security), and Article 13 (right to an effective remedy) of the European Convention on Human Rights.
The ECtHR has granted their appeal and awarded compensation for material damages in the amount of 12,000 euros and compensation for moral damages in the amount of 180,000 euros. According to the ECtHR's decision, the complainants are to receive another amount of about 7200 euros from the Russian authorities for legal costs, the "RAPSI" (Russian Agency of Legal and Judicial Information) reports.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 31, it was also reported on the ECtHR's decision on the complaints filed in connection with the disappearance of five residents of Chechnya in 2001-2006. Their relatives were awarded compensation in the amount of 317,818 euros.
