This year ECtHR has announced 14 decisions on complaints lodged by residents of Chechnya and Ingushetia
The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) has found Russia guilty for disappearance of two men and a pregnant woman in the case "Bopaeva and Others vs. Russia", who were detained on April 17, 2000, in Grozny. This was reported by a staff member of the organization for legal aid "Astreya".
In total, according to the "Caucasian Knot" calculations, since the beginning of the year, the ECtHR has adopted decisions in 14 cases on complaints filed by residents of Chechnya and Ingushetia.
"In all cases, the ECtHR was struck by the failure to investigate the disappearance of the complainants' relatives, in particular, by the delay in questioning of key witnesses and potential criminals that directly and extremely obstruct the course of justice," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Vanessa Kogan, Director of the independent non-commercial organization "Astreya" (the partner organization of the "Russian Justice Initiative").
It is hard to mention the exact number of complaints filed to the ECtHR because of the fact that they come from different organizations and individuals. This was stated by Olga Sadovskaya, Deputy Chair of the interregional public organization "Committee against Torture". According to her, there are hundreds of such cases, and the cases on crimes that were committed in the 1990s during the first and second Chechen campaigns are still waiting for their consideration.
However, Olga Sadovskaya has emphasized that when the case becomes a priority, that is, when there is a specific threat to human life, the situation is different.
