During the week of October 28-November 3, 2013, 12 persons fell victim to armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week of October 28-November 3, 2013, at least 33 persons suffered in the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. Of them, 12 persons were killed, and 21 persons were wounded. These are the results of calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

The death toll includes one law enforcer in Kabardino-Balkaria, five civilians, four in Dagestan and one in the Stavropol Territory, and six suspected members of the armed underground, including two in Kabardino-Balkaria, two in North Ossetia, one in Dagestan, and one in Ingushetia.

Special operations and CTO

On October 29, in the village of Zalukokoazhe, Zolsky District of Kabardino-Balkaria, the counterterrorist operation (CTO) regime was introduced. According to power agents, a group of several militants was blocked at a private house located in Kushev Street. When offered to surrender, the militants opened fire on the power agents. During the armed clashes, four power agents were wounded. One of them died from the wounds. According to a source from the republic's power bodies, two militants were killed in the special operation.

Bombings and terror acts

On October 30, two explosive devices detonated at the entrance to the "Derbent" store located in the centre of Makhachkala. At first, one explosion took place, and after people gathered at the place, the second explosion was triggered. The explosions caused a fire that spread to nearby shops and cafes. As a result of the explosions, 18 persons were wounded, and one of them died. According to investigators, six wounded persons are staff members of the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA), and the other victims of the explosions are civilians.

Attacks on civilians

On October 31, in the village of Komsomolskoe, Kizilyurt District of Dagestan, unidentified persons shelled Magomed Gadjiev, the former head of the Kizilyurt District, at his working place. Magomed Gadjiev died from the wounds. A bodyguard of Magomed Gadjiev was wounded in the attack.

On November 2, in Shamil Street in Makhachkala, unidentified persons shelled a Lexus car, driven by Murad Kasimov, a staff member of the Ministry of Finance of Dagestan. The driver died from the wounds at the place.

Detentions

On October 30, a suspected accomplice of militants, a resident of the village of Zalukokoazhe of the Zolsky District of Kabardino-Balkaria, confessed that in the period from July till October 2013, he provided assistance to militants, one of which was put on the federal wanted list for murder, and the second had a criminal record on charges of murder. The suspect was detained.

On October 30, Nargiz Babaeva, a resident of Makhachkala, said during the search, power agents detained her mother Larisa Babaeva and sister Olesya Babaeva. According to Nargiz Babaeva, the power agents, who conducted the search, arrived from Volgograd. During the search, the power agents found a grenade, which, according to Nargiz Babaeva, had been planted by them. After the search, Olesya and Larisa Babaeva were brought to the Centre to Combat Extremism. The attention of the power agents may be caused by the fact that the Olesya Babaeva's husband had been convicted for involvement in an illegal armed formation (IAF).
