Figurants in Akhtakhanov murder case sentenced to 10 and 12 years in prison
Today, the court has sentenced Mairbek Umaev and Zelimkhan Karimov, who were found guilty of complicity in the murder of the Chechen poet Ruslan Akhtakhanov, a Pro-Rector of the Modern Humanitarian Academy.
Ruslan Akhtakhanov, who had spoken in favour of preserving Chechnya as a part of Russia and for Chechnya as a secular republic, was killed on November 16, 2011, in Moscow. The defendants in the case – the natives of Chechnya Mairbek Umaev and Zelimkhan Karimov refused to plead guilty.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on December 3 the prosecutor demanded to sentence Umaev to 15 years and Karimov to 14 years in a high security colony. Today, the Savyolovo Court of Moscow found Umaev and Karimov guilty.
The "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports that the appointed prison terms for Umaev and Karimov were 12 and 10 years accordingly.
