Defence to challenge verdict of Dagestani activist Ulker Gashimova
The verdict of Ulker Gashimova, a Makhachkala native, will be appealed against; she refuses to plead guilty, her advocate has informed.
The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on October 8, the Rostov-on-Don Military Court sentenced Gashimova to 4.5 years in a penal colony, finding her guilty of calls for terrorism and extremism.
In the spring of 2023, Ulker Gashimova, 23, was detained at a Moscow airport while trying to fly out of Russia. Her bridegroom said that she had planned to seek political asylum in the Netherlands. After two arrests near Moscow, Ulker was sent to Dagestan and placed into the SIZO (pre-trial prison), after which she refused an advocate and decided to defend herself on her own. On April 16, 2024, her case reached the court, but the trial was delayed due to a judge replacement. Gashimova complained about investigator's pressure.
Her defence has not yet received the full text of Gashimova's sentence, so the key arguments of the complaint have not yet been formulated, but the sentence will be appealed against, Nikita Buklov, an advocate, has promised.
Anton Kolomitsyn, Ulker Gashimova's bridegroom, who lives in the Netherlands, said that he had received no letters from her in recent months.
