"Foreign Policy": Russia's return to violent politics on the eve of the 2014 Games will lead to new conflict in Northern Caucasus
The Northern Caucasus is among the 10 regions in the world, where military conflicts can start or continue in 2014, claims the US magazine named "Foreign Policy".
"Most probably, the return to tough and force will lead to a broadening of the conflict after the Games are over, which means that 2014 will be another bloody year for Southern Russia," the "Inopressa" quotes the American magazine on its website.
At the same time, the explosions in Volgograd open a way for the Russian president to lead the global war on radical Islamism, the journalist Rachel Marsden notes on the pages of the American newspaper The Tennessean.
"The Syrian conflict, the Sochi Olympics and the existence of Islamism – all this gives Russia a pretext for taking the leading role in the fight on terrorism. So, what should Putin do? He should fight for gold in the antiterrorist pentathlon," the portal "InoTV" quotes Ms Marsden's conclusion.
Besides, the journalist asserts in the newspaper that Doku Umarov, the leader of the "Imarat Kavkaz", which is banned in Russia, is also the "America's problem", and recalls that for information leading to his capture, the US government had appointed a reward of 5 million US dollars.
