Relatives of Dagestani native state his illegal detention in Adler
In the city of Adler, policemen of the Tsentralny ROVD (District Interior Division) of Sochi detained Yakov Babakov, a native of Dagestan, whose brother had recently converted to Islam, said Babakov's relatives.
Relatives of the detainee appealed to the Dagestani Regional Public Organization (DRPO) "Pravozaschita" (Advocacy), said Aisha Selimkhanova, an employee of the DRPO.
"We received information that on January 10, Yakov Babakov, born in 1982, who had worked in Adler for about six months, was detained. According to his relatives, the reason was in the fact that his brother, who lives in Dagestan, had taken Islam. Yakov himself is not a Muslim. Earlier, Yakov and his family had been also harassed by law enforcers," Selimkhanova told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.
According to her story, on January 11 it became clear that Yakov Babakov was kept at the Tsentralny ROVD of Sochi, charged with disorderly conduct. A court hearing is planned on his case.
The detention has nothing to do with the fact that Yakov Babakov's brother became a Muslim, a source from the on duty unit of the Sochi OVD told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent; however, he did not explain what exactly the detainee was suspected of.
