Co-organizer of Moscow rally against Caucasophobia suspected of extremism
Mukhammad Magomedov, an activist of the Dagestani Public Organization "Union of the Just" and a co-organizer of the rally in Moscow against Caucasophobia scheduled for January 26, is suspected of involvement in an extremist organization. According to Magomedov, he is now under recognizance not to leave.
On Saturday, the rally organizers were going to apply to the Mayor of Moscow for a permit. At the rally, they planned to protest against the anti-Caucasian sentiments in mass media and declare inadmissibility to oppose the construction of mosques.
According to Magomedov, his prosecution was caused by his participation in the conference "Problems of Islam in Russia", held in Moscow in 2012. The conference was attended by members of Russian public and religious organizations, said the activist.
In his words, when he spoke at the conference, he covered the human rights problems in Dagestan, including discrimination of believers and restrictions imposed on the freedom of religion.
Investigators do not link the charges with the upcoming rally against Caucasophobia in Moscow, said the suspect.
Abakar Abakarov, another co-organizer of the rally and a representative of the Russian Congress of Caucasian Nations (RCCN) in Dagestan, told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent that the case against Magomedov would shift the rally for a few days, since the application will be filed later, on January 13.
