Olympic Torch Relay held in Volgograd at increased security measures (video)
In the morning on January 20, the 105th day of the Olympic Torch Relay began in Volgograd, where the end of last December was marked by explosions at the railway station and in a trolleybus. The Relay was held at minus 20 degrees Centigrade, and with very few spectators. However, the residents of the city who came to watch the relay of the Olympic Flame said they did not fear new terror acts during public events.
According to a source from local law enforcement bodies, the level of security in Volgograd on the day of the Olympic Torch Relay was close to the one in Sochi. "In total, on that day, 3811 power agents were involved in ensuring security," he said.
According to the source, the whole area within the route of the relay was split into 31 sectors; each was examined by experts with dogs. "They began inspecting the houses located along and close to the route of the relay two months ago. They checked all the attics and basements," the V1 quotes its source from power agencies.
Along the route of the Olympic Torch Relay, behind the cordon, a scanty crowd of spectators could be seen – mainly, Medical Academy students and pensioners.
"Such activities support people. It happens not every year," said Natalia Dokatova, a pensioner, who came to the event with his grandchildren. She added that she was not afraid of terror acts during mass events. "If you think about bad things, then, the life isn't worth living. We were very sorry, of course, but still life goes on," she said.
