Lavrov: Russia rejects NATO's help in securing Olympic Games in Sochi

Russia needs no help from the NATO in ensure security of the Sochi Olympics – it is enough to operate the Security Headquarters, where the participating countries of the Olympic Games will be presented, said the Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov.

According to his story, as reported by the RIA "Novosti", most countries have their representatives in the above Headquarters, which is working to provide security under the auspices of the Russia's FSB (Federal Security Bureau) for a few weeks already.

Meanwhile, Russia is ready to continue its practical cooperation with the European Union (EU) to ensure the safety of the Olympics. The recent EU-Russia summit resulted in a joint declaration on combating terrorism, said Jose Manuel Barroso, the head of the European Commission. He emphasized the practical Russia-EU cooperation in securing the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, the ITAR-TASS reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that the US involvement in ensuring security of the Olympic Games in Sochi was also discussed. On January 21, the US President Barack Obama offered help to his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin in ensuring the security of the event.

On January 5, the US Department of Defence (DoD) offered help to Russia in preventing terrorist threats before the Olympics. On January 22, the DoD expressed its readiness to integrate its high-tech equipment intended for detecting and jamming militants' radio signals into the Russia's security system at the Olympics.
