On February 3-9, 15 people fell victim to armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week from February 3 to February 9, 2014, the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus affected at least 15 people; 14 of them were killed and one person was wounded. These are the results of the calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

The death toll includes 10 suspected members of the armed underground – nine in Dagestan and one in Kabardino-Balkaria; and four civilians – three in Chechnya and one in Karachay-Cherkessia.

Attacks on law enforcers

On February 7, in Kabardino-Balkaria, policemen tried to stop a Volkswagen car to check documents. According to power agents, the driver opened fire and was killed by policemen's response fire. According to preliminary reports, the casualty was a resident of the village of Zalukokoazhe, Zolsk District of Kabardino-Balkaria and an active militants' accomplice.

Special and counterterrorist operations

On February 5, the city of Izberbash was put under the counterterrorist operation (CTO) regime. A house was blocked there where members of the armed underground were hiding. In the course of the shootout, three alleged members of illegal armed formations (IAFs) were killed, another one surrendered; and nobody was hurt from among law enforcers and locals. The death toll includes, according to security officials, Djamaldin Mirzaev, the leader of the "Kadar" terrorist grouping, and his assistant Yusup Yakhyaev.

On February 6, in Derbent, a house was blocked in Salman Street, in one of the apartments of which a member of the armed underground was hiding. In the course of the firefight, the alleged militant was killed and later identified as Khanmagomed Khanmagomedov, a resident of the Suleiman-Stalsky District of Dagestan.

On February 8, during a special operation, power agents surrounded a multi-storey building in Gagarin Street in Makhachkala, where in an apartment on the third floor IAF members were hiding. In the course of negotiations, one of the militants surrendered, while others refused to go out and attempted to break through the cordon. According to security officials, in the course of subsequent shootout, five militants of the "Buynaksk" grouping were killed.

Explosions and terror acts

On February 7, in the dwelling settlement of Alkhazurovo of the Urus-Martan District, an explosion of a hand grenade killed three men; one more was hospitalized in grave condition. According to preliminary information, one of the four men during a quarrel snatched out a grenade and pulled the pin out.

Detentions

On February 3, Murat Borlakov, born in 1987, a resident of Karachay-Cherkessia, was detained with his two friends right in the street and taken to the Ust-Djegutin ROVD (District Interior Division). An hour later, Borlakov's relatives learned that his body be delivered to the district bureau of forensic examination. According to relatives, the death was caused by physical violence and electric shock to Borlakov by policemen. Later, Murat Karakotov, the district chief of criminal police, and two employees in the same division – Rasul Mamchuev and Ansar Laipanov – were detained by the court.

On February 3, policemen detained a man in Nalchik, who was suspected of possessing ammunition and drugs. In the course of a search, policemen found a hand grenade, 36 rounds of ammunition and about three grams of heroin. All the stuff was confiscated, and the supposed owner was detained.

On February 4, in Makhachkala, employees of the Centre for Combating Extremism (CCE) detained a local resident Asya Magomedova. She is suspected of aiding IAF members and participation in illegal armed formations.

On February 5, Madina Djamalutdinova, a native of Kyrgyzstan, was detained in Dagestan. She was detained by employees of the CCE at the "Uytash" Airport, where she and her mother were about to fly home. On February 7, she was arrested by the court for two months on suspicion of involvement in IAFs.

Disappearances

On February 4, Shamil Khubiev, Imam of the settlement of Mirny in the Stavropol Territory, disappeared. On that day, he was invited to Pyatigorsk to a meeting at the Muftiat. On February 5, his empty car was found on the highway Kislovodsk-Pyatigorsk.
