US State Department: conflict in North Caucasus led to numerous human rights violations

The US Department of State has criticized, in its annual report on the global situation with human rights, the Russian government for restricting the fundamental human rights and freedoms, with particular emphasis on the situation in North Caucasus.

The report states that the conflict of power agents and members of the armed underground in North Caucasus "has led to numerous human rights violations, including killings, torture, physical abuse and kidnappings for political reasons."

The report of the US State Department presents the statistics of the "Caucasian Knot" and notes that the most strained situation is observed in Dagestan.

"Dagestan remains the most violent region in North Caucasus, with more than 60 percent of all accidents in the region. According to the 'Caucasian Knot', the overall level of violence in North Caucasus went down by almost 30 percent," says the report of the US State Department, published on February 28 in English on the official website of the Department.
