Baku CoA leaves "Musavat" activist Faraj Kerimli in custody

The Baku Court of Appeal (CoA) has dismissed the complaint of Faraj Kerimli, an activist of the "Musavat" Party, lodged against his three-month-long arrest on charges of illegal possession and sale of drugs. This was announced by his advocate Nemat Kerimli.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Faraj Kerimli was detained on July 23 in Baku, in the territory of the health centre, where he brought his mother for treatment. According to investigators, drugs were found on Kerimli, and besides he was involved in promoting psychotropic substances in social networks on the Internet.

The appeal complaint was lodged in connection with the violation of Faraj's rights at detention, said Nemat Kerimli. According to his story, at the Baku CoA, his client felt bad because of his liver disease and asked to postpone the session. However, the judge would not agree.

The defence intends to lodge a new petition to the Narimanov District Court of Baku asking to replace Faruj's custody for home arrest, said the advocate.

"Most likely, we'll submit a complaint to the European Court of Human Rights on the violation of the right to liberty and immunity, the right to a fair trial and, possibly, the prohibition of torture," said Nemat Kerimli, adding that his client "believes that his prosecution is politically motivated."
