During week of July 28-August 3, 2014, 9 persons fell victim to armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week of July 28-August 3, 2014, at least 9 persons suffered in the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. Of them, 5 persons were killed, and 4 persons were wounded. These are the results of calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

The death toll includes one law enforcer in Dagestan, two civilians in Ingushetia and Kabardino-Balkaria, and two suspected members of the armed underground in Kabardino-Balkaria.

Attacks on law enforcers

On August 1, in the Terek District of Kabardino-Balkaria, on the 2nd kilometre of the road "Terek-Arik-Kuyan", policemen tried to stop a Lada Priora car to check the driver's ID. However, people opened fire from the car and started a shootout. As a result of the armed clash, the criminals were killed. They were identified as two residents of the town of Terek, born in 1982 and 1980. Both of them had several earlier criminal records. According to the Investigating Committee of the Russian Federation (ICRF), the killed men were members of the armed underground.

On August 2, at 11.30 p.m., near the village of Novy Chirkei of the Kizilyurt District of Dagestan, on the federal highway "Kavkaz", unidentified persons shelled a VAZ-21099 police car. As a result of the attack, one policeman died on the scene, and four other policemen were brought to the Kizilyurt hospital with various injuries. The lives of the wounded policemen are not in danger, and their condition is stable. This was reported by Spokesperson of the ICRF's Department for Dagestan.

Bombings and terror acts

On August 1, at about 9:45 a.m. Moscow time, one of the buildings of the Dagestani Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) in Makhachkala was attacked by unidentified persons, who shelled it from a grenade launcher. The shot was fired to the building of the Centre for Combating Extremism (CCE) of the Dagestani MIA. The attack caused no human victims or destructions.

Attacks on civilians

On July 28, in the village of Plievo of the Nazran District of Ingushetia, Rustam Azhigov, a local resident, was attacked by gunmen from a VAZ-2107 car. Rustam Azhigov was killed in the shelling. There were allegedly two attackers, and they managed to escape.

In the evening of July 31, inNalchik, journalist Timur Kuashev, a public activist and a magazine "Dosh" correspondent, was disappeared. On August 1, at about 6:00 p.m., the body of Timur Kuashev was found by staff members of the Ministry for Emergencies (MfE) in the residential district of "Dolinsk" in the woods near the road. The forensic examination has revealed no signs of a violent death. The autopsy has been conducted; however, no results have been reported yet. Meanwhile, Abakar Abakarov, a friend of Timur Kuashev, believes that the journalist was murdered. According to Abakar Abakarov, the journalist's body bears signs of poisoning and a sign of the injection.

Detentions

In the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania, policemen together with the Regional FSB Department have detained three persons suspected of involvement in illegal arms trafficking. The policemen seized from the detainees several firearms, including a grenade launcher.

On July 31, law enforcers detained Musa Magomedov, a resident of the village of Nechaevka of the Kizilyurt District of Dagestan. At 8:00 a.m., the policemen searched the house of Musa Magomedov and found weapons in the house. The detainee's family members believe that the weapons had been planted by the policemen. On August 1, the relatives of Musa Magomedov held a spontaneous gathering, demanding to release the detainee. In the evening of August 2, Musa Magomedov was released from custody.

On August 2, in the Lenin District of Grozny, policemen detained a 30-year-old native of the village of Bamut of the Achkhoi-Martan District of Chechnya on suspicion of aiding and abetting members of an illegal armed formation (IAF). According to the police, during the period from 2007 to 2009, the detainee aided Azamat Makhauri, an active member of the armed underground, supplied him with food and provided him with digital information carriers.
