Azerbaijan: CoA leaves Leyla Yunus in custody

Today, the Baku Court of Appeal (CoA) has dismissed the complaint lodged against the arrest of Leyla Yunus, the Director of the Institute for Peace and Democracy (IPD), accused of treason.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Leyla Yunus was detained on July 30 in Baku and charged, together with her husband Arif Yunus, under several articles, including treason.

The lawyer Djavad Djavadly, who visited Leyla Yunus on August 4 at the Baku SIZO-1 (pre-trial prison) located in the village of Kyurdakhany, said about the worsening of his client's health condition. According to his story, Leyla Yunus has a severe form of diabetes; and the custody has negative impact on her health.

Today, the appeal complaint against Leyla's arrest was considered by the Baku CoA, Djavad Djavadly told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

"Unfortunately, the CoA failed to take into account her health condition," said Djavadly.

The defence of Leyla Yunus intends to demand her release from the respective investigative authority.
