In Vladikavkaz, people light 300 candles to commemorate victims of war in South Ossetia

In the evening of August 8, in Vladikavkaz, the action "Candle of Memory" dedicated to the sixth anniversary of the war in South Ossetia took place in front of the Saint George Church. People lit about 300 candles to form on the ground a phrase "Remember 08.08.08" in order to commemorate victims of the armed conflict in August 2008.

People came and lit candles to pay tribute to the memory of the victims. They noted that such events should not be forgotten and that such actions contribute to the memory.

People from South Ossetia, who live in Vladikavkaz now, also came to light candles. "We conceive the events not only of the period of 20 years, but also of centuries. I speak of the genocide of the Ossetian people by Georgia. It will take a lot of time to establish a kind of relations. I think it won't take place in the coming decades," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Nugzar Khabalov, who came to the memory action together with his family members.

In total, the event was attended by about 150 persons.

The warfare between Georgia and South Ossetia began on August 8, 2008. Russia soon got involved into the conflict. Active combat actions lasted for five days, after which Russia announced the end of the operation of forcing Georgia to peace; and on August 26, the then Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed decrees on recognition of independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia by the Russian Federation. On August 28, 2008, in its turn, the Georgian Parliament voted to disrupt diplomatic relations with Russia.
