NAC reports liquidation of 158 militants in Northern Caucasus since start of year
In the course of special operations conducted in Northern Caucasus this year, law enforcers have eliminated 158 active militants, including 25 militants' leaders. This was reported by Alexander Bortnikov, the Chairman of the National Antiterrorist Committee (NAC) during the visiting NAC meeting held in Magas on August 12. According to Alexander Bortnikov, Northern Caucasus still faces the threat of terror acts that can be committed by separate groupings of militants.
Alexander Bortnikov has noted that in 2014, law enforcers prevented 35 terrorist crimes and detained 328 militants and their accomplices.
According to the NAC's Chairman, the continuing threat of terror acts requires adequate countermeasures from the authorities. Alexander Bortnikov has added that in 2013-2014, the antiterrorist commissions, security agencies and law enforcement bodies adopted measures of preventive work, in the result of which 68 former militants and their accomplices stopped their terrorist activities. Ingushetia became the leader in adopting the measures of the above direction.
According to Alexander Bortnikov, to involve young people in the armed underground, militants widely use slow pace of solution of socio-economic problems and, above all, reduction of unemployment among young people, and high level of corruption.
