Experts treat California's resolution on NKR's independence as step to its international recognition

Armenian politicians and political analysts treat as important the fact of recognition of the independence of the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) by the Californian State Senate; however, they also admit that this fact will not change the legal status of their republic.

The ‘Caucasian Knot’ has reported that on August 27, the California State Senate adopted a resolution recognizing the Nagorno-Karabakh Republic (NKR) and called on the President of the United States to join California in recognizing the NKR.

"The resolution is very important, since it recognizes Artsakh as a state," stated Shavarsh Kocharyan, the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Armenia, at the today's government sitting.

"Recognition of the NKR's independence by the American state creates the information and political background around the Nagorno-Karabakh issue," said Sergey Minasyan, the Deputy Director of the Caucasus Institute.

Meanwhile, Minasyan believes that "the fact of recognition cannot yet affect the international legal status of the NKR, since the international recognition can be pronounced only by independent governments."

Naira Zorabyan, a member of the Armenian delegation to the PACE, "doubts that in the near future, the United States President's Office will recognize the independence of the NKR, as well as Armenia, which believes that at present, its non-recognition of the NKR's independence is a kind of a compromise from its side in the negotiations within the OSCE Minsk Group." Meanwhile, Naira Zorabyan has emphasized that any kind of recognition becomes an achievement on the way towards the international recognition.
