In Azerbaijan, arrested human rights defender Leyla Yunus receives no medical care, her advocate claims

In Azerbaijan, Leyla Yunus, an arrested human rights defender, is deprived of necessary medical care at the SIZO (pre-trial prison), advocate Alaif Gasanov states.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that Leyla Yunus was detained on July 30 in Baku and charged, together with her husband Arif Yunus, under several articles, including treason.

Today, advocate Alaif Gasanov has visited Leyla Yunus at the Baku SIZO No. 1 located in the village of Kyurdakhany. "Leyla Yunus suffers from diabetes, and her health state can deteriorate dramatically at any time. Her toe gets numb because of diabetes; however, she receives no necessary medical care," Alaif Gasanov told the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent.

According to the advocate, the human rights defender has also complained about ill-treatment by her cellmate and a wardress of the SIZO.

"Leyla Yunus has information that a provocation is being plotted against her. She complained against her cellmate Nuriya Guseinova and Nazaket Mamedova, a wardress. My client has said that Nuriya Guseinova is trying to provoke a conflict by her behaviour," Alaif Gasanov has said.

According to the advocate, despite the human rights defender's formal appeal to the SIZO administration with a request to meet her, the SIZO head refuses to listen to Leyla Yunus.
