Defence challenges guilty verdict against Dagestani native sentenced for participation in conflict in Syria
On September 1, advocate Sapiyat Magomedova challenged the guilty verdict against Shamil Nurmagomedov, a resident of Dagestan, who on August 21 was sentenced to four years of imprisonment for taking part in the armed conflict in Syria.
According to the defence, the testimony taken as a basis of evidence was received under pressure from staff members of the Centre to Combat Extremism (CCE) on December 8, 2013.
"Shamil Nurmagomedov was subjected to psychological pressure and threats with firearms by investigator <...> and staff members of the CCE in order to force him to incriminate himself," the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent was told by Sapiyat Magomedova, an advocate of Shamil Nurmagomedov.
The advocate has stated that Shamil Nurmagomedov received threats that in case if he refused to sign a confession, he would never see his family members and his mother again.
Sapiyat Magomedova has emphasized that the above confession was taken as the basis for the guilty verdict, despite the fact that Shamil Nurmagomedov never confirmed it.
