Georgia receives NATO's "enhanced cooperation" package

On September 5, the NATO summit held in Wales provided Georgia with a package of "enhanced cooperation", according to which the country is able to activate its preparation process for joining the NATO. The political analysts interviewed by the "Caucasian Knot" have welcomed the package of "enhanced cooperation".

The document states that an "essential package for Georgia that assumes an increase of defence capacity, training and exercises" has been signed. It has also fixed support for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty.

At this stage, Georgia has everything what could be reached, said Kakha Gogolashvili, an expert from the NGO "Institute for Strategic Studies". According to his version, now the country needs to strengthen its military power; and the NATO is trying to help with training and a number of joint programmes.

Georgia has missed a chance to achieve more; and the government has failed to do its best, said Mamuka Zhgenti, an expert from the NGO "Georgian Institute of European Values" and a former Georgia's Permanent Representative to the Council of Europe. He expressed regret that Georgia was not awarded the Membership Action Plan (MAP).

Let us remind you that in October 2013 the NATO's Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that Georgia would not become a NATO member in 2014 yet: the unresolved problems with Abkhazia and South Ossetia are the obstacles.
