Azerbaijan: CoA upholds verdict to activist Gasan Guseinli

In Azerbaijan, the Court of Appeal (CoA) has dismissed the appeal filed by Gasan Guseinli, the head of the Educative Centre "Intellectual Citizen", who was sentenced on charges of disorderly conduct and illegal possession of cold steel arms. The defence of the activist intends to file a cassation to the Supreme Court, advocate Alaif Gasanov reports.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on July 14, in the city of Ganja (Gandzha), the court sentenced the activist to six years of imprisonment.

"Without the repeated judicial investigation, the appeal has been reduced to a mere formality," Alaif Gasanov has stated.

According to the advocate, no material evidence has been presented to the court. Besides, the entire indictment "was built on the testimonies of the victim and witnesses, who had been repeatedly involved in other criminal cases as witnesses." "The police often use such persons for fabrication of criminal cases," Alaif Gasanov notes.

The advocate has announced the intention to file a cassation to the Supreme Court and then to the European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR).

The advocate has not ruled out that the authorities were not satisfied with the activity of the Educative Centre headed by Gasan Guseinli to facilitate foreign education for young citizens of Azerbaijan.
