In Chechnya, entrepreneur fined for distributing book "Fortress of the Muslim"

In Grozny, the court has recognized entrepreneur Islam Bashlaev guilty of distributing the book "Fortress of the Muslim" included in the federal list of banned literature. On September 8, the Zavodskoi District Court of Grozny found Islam Bashlaev guilty of an administrative offense under Article 20.29 of the Code of Administrative Offences of the Russian Federation (storage of extremist materials for mass distribution) and sentenced the defendant to a fine.

Representatives of the Spiritual Administration of Muslims (SAM) and experts doubt the justification of the inclusion of the book in the list of extremist materials.

According to Salakh Mezhiev, Chairman of the SAM of the Chechen Republic, the book "Fortress of the Muslim" was recognized as extremist among other books banned by the Lenin District Court of Orenburg in March 2012.

"We treat the Court's decision as unlawful, and thus, we believe the administrative case against Islam Bashlaev was opened unlawfully. The book 'Fortress of the Muslim' contains shortcomings arising because of translation problems; however, this fact does not mean that the book should be included in the list of banned religious literature," Salakh Mezhiev states.
