Attacks on journalists in Armenia result from impunity, NGOs state

The recurring incidents of attacks on media workers and obstacles to their activities result from the impunity of criminals who have committed such acts. Meanwhile, journalists fail to use all the means of judicial protection. This was stated by members of Armenian NGOs at the press conference in Yerevan.

The "Caucasian Knot" has reported that on September 9, during the protest action in Yerevan, a staff member of the Parliament Security Service came into conflict with Marina Khachatryan, a journalist of the "A1+" TV Channel. According to the video record of the incident disseminated in the common social networks and media, the security officer used force against the journalist.

On September 12, in connection with the incident, the NGO "Media Centre" organized the press conference "Time to move from words to deeds", the "Caucasian Knot" correspondent reports.

"In Armenia, it has become a tradition, when policemen use violence against citizens and bear no responsibility for their actions," stated at the press conference Ashot Melikyan, the Chairman of the Committee to Protect Freedom of Speech. He has added that the impunity has led to the fact that staff members of different public institutions commit such acts.
