During week of September 8-14, 2014, two persons fell victim to armed conflict in Northern Caucasus

During the week of September 8-14, 2014, at least two persons were killed in the armed conflict in Northern Caucasus. No wounded persons were reported. These are the results of calculations made by the "Caucasian Knot" based on its own materials and information from other open sources.

According to law enforcers, both deceased persons were suspected members of the armed underground in Dagestan.

Special and counterterrorist operations

On September 11, at about 2:00 p.m. Moscow time, the counterterrorist operation (CTO) regime was introduced in the Tabasaran District of Dagestan. In the mountainous and forested area in the vicinities of the villages of Uzul and Khuzhni, law enforcers encountered two members of the armed underground, who opened fire on them and tried to escape. However, they were killed in a brief armed clash. At the scene, the law enforcers found weapons and ammunition. The killed men have been preliminary identified as Fizuli Mirzakhanov and Djafar Khanmagomedov, members of the local militant grouping named "South".

Detentions

On September 5, in Makhachkala, law enforcers detained Rustam Demishev, a resident of the village of Bavtugai of the Kizilyurt District of Dagestan. According to investigators, the suspect possessed a Makarov pistol and a magazine case for it. During the investigation, it was found out that the pistol is the service weapon of a policeman from the Gergebil District of Dagestan. This information was reported on September 9.

On September 9, at about 5:00 a.m., in Nalchik, unidentified men in masks kidnapped local resident Zalimkhan Tkhamokov. At 7:00 p.m., the disappeared man called his family members and told them that he was detained and charged with illegal possession of weapons. Zalimkhan said that the armed men forced him into their car, handcuffed him and planted a grenade and a fuse to his trouser pockets. Then, they invited witnesses and "seized" banned items. Moreover, law enforcers "'found" rounds among the Zalimkhan's belongings. Then, they put a plastic bag to his head and drove him away to some unknown destination. On September 12, in Nalchik, the court pronounced the pre-trial restriction measure against Zalimkhan Tkhamokov in the form of one-month home arrest.

On September 12, in Makhachkala, policemen together with staff members of other power institutions cordoned off the buildings of the mosques located in Hungarian Fighters Street and in Kotrov Street immediately after the beginning of the Friday prayer. They detained several dozen of mosque-goers and brought to the Soviet District ROVD (District Interior Division). Similar detentions also took place at the Salafi mosque of Derbent, and mosque-goers were also brought to the police. By the evening of the same day, all the detained mosque-goers in Makhachkala and Derbent were released.

Kidnappings

On September 9, after 8:00 p.m., Islam Shamsudinov, a resident of Kizilyurt, left home with his son in a green BMW car. They went to football training. Later, Islam sent his son home, since the child was severely attacked by mosquitoes. Islam Shamsudinov himself did not return from the training. His mobile phone was switched off, that never happened earlier. Later, the family members of the disappeared man found out that the Islam Shamsudinov's car was stopped by men in uniform. Four men came out of their car, entered the Islam Shamsudinov's car and drove him away to some unknown destination.

On September 11, at about 6:20 p.m., on the corner of Batyr and Suleiman-Stalsky Streets in Makhachkala, 5-8 armed men, most of whom were in masks, arrived in two cars. They forced a young man out a white Priora car, pushed him into one of their cars and drove him away to some unknown destination. Officials from the Makhachkala UVD (Interior Department) said that they had no information about the kidnapping.
